“Now is the perfect time to be showing that our voices matter and we are making change happen.” Rep. Steve Bergquist

Thanks to Steve Bergquist for joining us for one of our online leadership seminars. He dialoged with our youth and staff about his wealth of experience and insights learned while being a high school social studies teacher, tennis coach, community leader, businessman and public servant.

First elected to the Washington State House of Representatives in 2012, Steve Bergquist is deputy majority floor leader. Some of his major legislative priorities have included creating more access to democracy through a group of voter access bills. Steve was the prime sponsor of a measure, passed in the 2018 session, allowing 16- and 17-year-olds to preregister to vote. He also passed landmark legislation to help raise the standards and create career ladder opportunities for Paraeducators in our public school classrooms. Outside the Legislature, he is active in community affairs and has helped hundreds of students gain valuable service experience.

The Freedom Center continues to turn on a dime, increasing our online classes and sessions during the shelter-in-place order. We are bringing experts from around the world with feet-on-the-ground experience in organizing, civic engagement and public service together with our youth and staff.

This is an excellent time to study the relevance and importance of transforming ourselves to make change in the world.
