by | Mar 14, 2023 | Press | 0 comments

The Gee’s Bend Quilters, renowned for their unique and powerful quilting tradition, will be featured in a special exhibition at the Joyce Gordon Gallery in Oakland from March 3-25, 2023. This event, organized by the Martin Luther King Jr Freedom Center in collaboration with the Peralta Community College District, also includes a lecture on March 4, where quilters Mary Ann Pettway, China Pettway, and Julia Pettway will share their experiences and the cultural significance of their craft. The quilters of Gee’s Bend have long been celebrated for their contribution to American art and the preservation of Black history, with their quilts serving as both beautiful works of art and powerful symbols of community and resilience. The exhibition and lecture are part of the Barbara Lee and Elihu Harris Lecture Series, which aims to foster dialogue on civil rights and community leadership.
