I fly like a bird
Who am I you ask?
I am a black woman chained
Down by the oppression of my Ancestors
But…

I am not?
You say-
You say I am not a Black Woman
Who eats with kings
And fights with the lions in his den
I am not, you say

I AM NOT
Because
I have light honey-kissed skin
I have hair not curly enough
I have lips too thin
And!
I have a nose, seeming white

What, you say?
My hair too kinky
My lips too bold and big
My skin too dark
And
My nose too wide,
looking black

But I do assure you
Even with your insults
Even with your devilish lies
I am a black woman
Who will always surprise.
